How do you keep ants out of the house? Whenever we open a food packet, it doesn't matter how tight you seal it short of using sticky tape, the ants will always get into it. We now have to put them in the refrigerator. We have a helper come in twice a week, and she put my cereal packet in the cupboard. This morning I spent ages removing the ants from it. I am wondering if the answer is to surround the house with a moat  Grin

What we did we followed each and every ant trail back and sealed it. At first it will seem like a impossible task but in the end you will reign supreme in your abode.

Resealable plastic bags and tupperware or similar. I have a problem with the bigger ants, the red ones that bite and the grey ones that have 4 legs and tails, they eat through the plastic bags, maybe I can find a way to hermetically seal the store, no big grey ants. Ahh D-Rats.

We had problems with the grey 4 legged ones, but we now feed the stray cats and that solved the problem.

Yes, Colin, I had a similar experience to you with the cereal packets. Now they go in the fridge, bizarre as it sounds.
I also have a healthy respect for those biting red ants. Got just two nips on the wrist, scratched them, and my entire arm up to the elbow became swollen. Doc said helpfully, "you haven't yet built up immunity to them, have you."

We did have problems at one time with ant trails but we now wash the floors with a week bleach solution which helped  solve that one. What we seem to get now is small groups of the advanced explorers. If any crumbs get dropped on the floor, the ants will very quickly find them. We do also use ant/insect chalk which is very effective. At one time the occasional ant found its way into our bed, but chalking around the bed legs solved that. We also try chalking around the food cupboard, but it is not possible to cover every entrance.

On the other forum livingintheph.3 one of the posters i think it was B-Ray recommend the use of borax welding flux mix with sugar, add water to get a wet paste. Place this on a piece of cardboard or thick paper and put where there is ants activity. The ants will flock to it, eat and take back to nest to feed the queen.
This will wipe out the whole colony. I have done that and it worked effectively for me. But after about two to three weeks they reapear. Since the weather starts to get hotter now i am seeing about three diffrent type of ants appearing. If there is a particular window or door crevice they are coming through to the house, then just go outside close by and look under the rocks, wood, or anything they can shelter under and most likely you will find a nest with little white eggs.
Borax can be purchase from any welding supply store.

Boric Acid.  A white powder you can sprinkle around crevices and under appliances, etc.  Kills 'em every time.

The family here, uses a cheaper and non poisonous method, a pot of boiling water poured on the nest, kills everything and nothing for the dogs or cats to eat and die. After it is done, we don't see them for 6 - 8 weeks, and they reappear somewhere else, different nest, different queen.
