Colin when I said follow the tracks I meant  find where they are coming from and use a sealer and plug the opening. I had a very bad problem with red, black, and gray ants. Over a couple of weeks I closed every opening I found and no more ants.

Hi Dick,

we have blocked every hole we could find and don't get ant trails. The problem seems to be with the initial explorer/search ants that I imagine enter under doors etc. We do block those as much as we can, but there is a limit on what we can do because this is a rented house. When I get a house built I will take every precaution, even if it does include a moat

I think the secret is to build a lake of boric acid, then put the house on stilts and build out from there. Just remember to keep the house suspended off the ground by at least 6 inches, that should keep the high jumping and pole volting ants out as well, But soon Philippine red ants will learn to swim as they are so adaptable to their er your surroundings. Besides if you build a moat they will tunnel under it.

What I've found so far is this:

1. Babypowder deters ants. I have some sprinkled in my bedroom along the closet and also around the bed. I used to have a problem with the tiny ants there, now they're gone.

2. Vinegar deters ants where babypowder is impractical. While vinegar doesn't last as long, it's more practical to use on kitchen counters, walls and even floors. There is a smell, but it disappears after an hour or so. Ants don't like it because it wipes out their scent trail. Wipe every day and you'll see ants starting to get discouraged and disappear.

3. Dish soap mixed with water is an excellent poison. I do about four big squirts of dish soap into a mister and fill the rest with water. Any ant I spray dies within seconds, no matter how big it is. It's particularly effective against large swarms and it's entirely safe unlike most commercial poisons. Sometimes I add a bit of chlorine if I'm feeling mean - but be careful or you'll get white spots around the house.

Mostly untested:
4. Pour a few drops of iodine on a sugar cube and set it out for the ants. You can also mix a strong powder cleanser with powdered sugar and set it out. Some people mix mustard with a chlorine based powdered cleaner. While I have only tried this once, and it did seem to work, I still have my doubts. So try at your own risk.

Oh and I hate ants.

Ants is a major problem and we have 4 sizes of them here. Once they nest in the attic it's even a bigger problem!

Fire ants, find the nest and dump GALLONS, (well maybe 2), of boiling water and poof gone.

A cheap ant control, take a big hand full of Pinoy hot peppers, the small red ones, split them and a large bunch of garlic split sideways and boil in 2 cup of tap water. Let cool, strain and put in one gallon of tap water with two tablespoons of dish soap, (add last), and roll SLOWLY, (don't need the soap foam). Put in a spray bottle and apply.

Remember, when it rains your CONTROL is gone unless in a covered area!

  I remember when Coin was complaining about ants.  My wife bought a cleaner called "simple green" and cleans the floors, counters with it. A roach just dies when it walks on it and we have not seen a ant since a week after starting too use it.  It supposed be organic and I have Shih Tzu, which are small dogs, and it does not seem too harm them.  Dick

Simple green CONCENTRATE kills even mammoth roaches in 1-2 shots ! and it does not smell bad like baygon !

I use Baygon for whole house spraying every 2 months... and then Simple Green for contact killing.

hello

i live in florida and we have red ants.  when you are bitten, make a paste from adorf meat  tenderizer and water and put onto the bites.  this will stop the sting and itch.  also will bring the pus up faster.  break the pus bag and you should be fine.
