Dr Mark Gan, Tooth Implants in Manila and More

Mark was educated in the U.S, University of California, so easy to talk with, a great host. He is more than a dentist, really, a surgeon too. His success rate in dental implants is an astounding 98 percent! He was first recommend to me by one of our list members who had some tooth implants, successful, of course. So many fail I was curious so went to Manila to visit him.

I recently found out he was also very good with children, from a Filipino friend who I met here, but from Manila. He said he would not take his children to anyone else not only because they like Mark, Dr. Gan, but because they won't go to anyone else. I have been in his chair so I know what they mean.

Is offices are easy to get to, no mater where you are in Manila. Just give him a call?

If I need an implant, it will for sure be Dr. Gan.  Mark and cosmetic dentistry too.

His clinics are at:

Hospitals, Quality of Medical Services

There are excellent hospitals in the major cities. One of the members of the List, "Living in the Philippines," is a M.D. in the States. He does volunteer work in the remote areas of the countryside here, where many people cannot afford doctors or medical treatment. He says that St. Luke's Hospital in Manila has done a wonderful job of recruiting U.S. trained Filipino doctors to work in that fine hospital. Since most Filipino doctors are trained with U.S. textbooks to pass the U.S. medical boards, their skills are world class. Dr. John says "You can get your open heart surgery here in the Philippines by a Filipino Doctor, or can fly to San Diego and get it done by a Filipino doctor there. The only difference is in the price." There are other excellent hospitals in Manila, Cebu, Davao and others. If I had a serious problem would go the Makati Medical Center in Manila, a preferred provider with Blue Cross, the coverage I have had for many years. They pay at any hospital here, but the reimbursement is not as much as at the Makati Medical Center where they know how to handle the paper work too, I am led to believe.

The hospitals offer something healing, in my opinion, sorely lacking in US and most other hospitals in western countries.  They allow visitors and relatives 24 hours, seven days a week.  No one is ever left along, in their suffering.  I think visitors help in the healing process.  The serve as "watchers," someone to do little things like wipe your forehead,  or hold you hand, something you would not or could not ask for a nurse to do, but do yourself, or do without,  probably.

This is a communal culture and some folks have never been alone except maybe in the bathroom.  So leaving them overnight alone in a hospital room could be very traumatic.  There are always enough unemployed relatives and friends around provide company, one of the nice thing about unemployment. In my opinion, as  a psychologist, I feel you will heal much quicker with loving companionship at your side.  You may not know anyone when you arrive but be surprised to find that when your neighbors find out you are in the hospital they show up to comfort you despite you not even knowing their names, especially in the smaller cities.

Insurance and Drugs

IIMG offers quality insurance products to individuals, families and groups living and traveling internationally.

Spanning over three decades, we have delivered superior service and security to thousands of members in 150 countries.
http://www.imglobal.com

If you are interested in medical, health insurance, I recommend Medibroker, and international firm that will cover you here and any place you may travel in the world.   Just click on  Medibroker  .For your Filipino  relatives who have no hospitalization insurance, there is a government program I highly recommend, http://www.philhealth.gov.ph.  This is not practical for expats unless you are married to a Filipino, but is better than nothing.  And many Filipinos who have no hospitalization find it a blessing, since the whole family can be covered for P100 per month. This is only for in patient treatment, and of course the coverage is limited.

For medications you may want for to order from the Philippines your own country,  including Viagra, and weight loss medications you can click on Pharmical Most medications are available here at about the same price you pay in the States, but watch out for expired drugs or counterfeit drugs at less than quality drug stores

As for medicine costs here, we have mercury drug which is like a Walgreens here. They do have a website https://www.mercurydrug.com  and they post their Email address: info@mercurydrug.com  so you can  Email them to obtain Rx prices here. -- TOP --

Prescription Drugs In The Philippines

Some drugs are not available here or are even more expensive than in the States. And there is a risk of getting counterfeit drugs here.

But with the Internet you can order from Canada, get good prices, even better than the States. Use Drug Delivery,  http://www.drugdelivery.ca for prompt service and good prices for drugs you know are not counter fit even if you are not Living in the Philippines as yet, for sure when you are if you can't get them here or get them here at a reasonable price from a reputable drug store.

Dental Services

My dentist, Dra. Fernando at Ayala Center here in Cebu. She charge for about $80 for the porcelain crowns, caps, does beautiful work and sings to you while she does the work. She and her husband also a dentist are a charming couple. She is a beauty. They are located in the top floor of Ayala Center, a large shopping mall in Cebu City, the only dentist there. They have their own lab. They felt they could not get the quality of work they required, here in Cebu, only from the labs in Manila. So they set up their own lab.

This means you can get an excellent fit and get it quickly. I recommend them without reservation for quality of work, price, knowledge of the latest procedures and concern for their customers dental health. They are trained and can do implants, but they do not advise them since there is no guarantee. You will see signs, "Lady Dentist" here in the Philippines. Filipinos believe female dentists are gentle. I do too.

Physical Therapy

The Philippines is famous for its physical therapy programs. A stroke victim or some one with a back problem, or just someone who wants a really great massage will get the best service at the very low prices. I have a back problem, and I pay US $3.00 for a one hour session. It is $4.50 with ultra sound and traction. Most of these Philippine physical therapist have passed the US boards. Some physical therapists are waiting for their appointments in other countries.

Cardiologists

Cosmetic Surgery, Face Lifts, Breast Implants, etc.

Cosmetic surgery is a bargain here. The face lift is $3,000 US including hospitalization, anesthesia, operating room and medicine. The eyes only, up and down, can be done for about $900 US in a doctor’s office. And you go home immediately afterward. The eyes alone, can really make a difference. I am surprised and pleased with what it did for me. I plan to have a face lift soon.

One member of our discussion list recently asked me the price of breast implants. I checked with Dr. Zubiri so I could post that too. Breast implants including hospitalization, anesthesia, operating room and medicine as does the quote above on face lifts, are P130,000. Some one asked the difference in prices for "big ones," vs. "regulars," not in jest, as I remember. Dok (as doctors and doctoras are called here,) only commented that he would not make them so big they would be harmful to a woman's body, what ever that means. I choose Dr, Zubiri, after my research and in my opinion, the best cosmetic surgeon in Cebu, to do my eye lift. He is US experienced and trained. He completed residency training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Bridgeport Hospital, a Yale University affiliate hospital in Connecticut. Then Dr. Zubiri worked in plastic a reconstructive Surgery at the New York University Medical Center. That includes Bellevue Hospital Center and Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital. He graduated from University of the Philippines College of Medicine. And he has practiced in Plastic Surgery in Cebu City for past 23 years. He has many satisfied foreign and local patients. But I guess the main reason I chose him was that other plastic surgeons, seeing I was a Caucasian, recommended him above all others here. Also, his follow up care, concern for the pre and post operative process was considerable, sometimes lacking with others. And his prices are very competitive compared to other Philippine Cosmetic surgeons. His office is next to Doctors hospital in Cebu City.

His telephone number is
Tel. 0632 254 7999 ,
FAX, 32 254 6608.
E-mail him at:
jszubiri@cutforapurpose.com

Check with him for latest prices, and of course, check the peso rate. There are other great doctors and surgeons here who have decided living in their own beautiful country is more important than the money they were making in the States or elsewhere. Now, after working overseas where they were able to save money, they can afford the luxury of living here, where their income is much lower, but their life is happier.

The blood banks at the Makati Medical Center and St. Luke's Medical Center (both in Metro Manila) maintain lists of possible donors of Rh Negative blood. In addition, the American Association of the Philippines maintains a similar list of possible donors.

The American Association of the Philippines can be contacted at (02) 892-5198 during normal working hours. During non-office hours, please contact the Embassy Duty Officer at: (02) 528-6300.\

Here is the US Embassy Website for additional information that may be helpful to members in the future for Medical Emergency Information:

I also have seen over the years a typical flurry of activity when someone needs blood. It's super when someone wants to help, but often ineffective if in the wrong place or direction. This is the source when it comes to blood in the Philippines the Philippine Red Cross:

We Americans are so used to hearing the words "American Red Cross" that we forget that it is part of an international organization which serves the whole world.

Good health is key to surgery in older patients. (Comments on more demand for cosmetic surgery in the States.)

With advanced medical procedures drugs, patients in good health even when they are older do well, much better than previously expected when undergoing surgery, if the are in good health

Doctors should tell older patients to expect their recovery from bypass to take a full year, he said, but they can tell them to expect good results if they are in their 60 and older.

Cardiologist Dr. Louis Cohen and his patient, Donna Tutlewski, 86, of Pentwater, Mich., discussed risks before her April 6 bypass operation.

Other than her blocked arteries, Tutlewski was in good health. Her heart doctor told her that improvements in surgical techniques could help her, she said.

How quickly she came home after surgery surprised everyone.

"They had told us to expect, at the minimum, 10 days" in the hospital, said one of her daughters-in-law, Delores Tutlewski. But after five days, "the nurses told us, 'We can't keep up with her. She's walking down the hallway.'
"

Staying healthier into old age also means that more older Americans want face-lifts and other cosmetic surgery.

One survey of ,many plastic surgeons found the number of cosmetic surgery procedures in patients age 60 and older increased by 35 percent from 2000 to 2003. The numbers are reported as an average number per surgeon. In 2000, per-surgeon average was 98; in 2003, it was 133.

In a published study, plastic surgeon Dr. Ferdinand Becker found that his older face-lift patients had no greater risk for complications when he compared them with younger patients with the same risk factors.

Becker said he sees vibrant, healthy octogenarians at his plastic surgery clinic in Vero Beach, Fla. Here too, in the Philippines, Dr. Zubiri is having success with his older patients, with dramatic results, and quick healing despite their age. He will not work on smokes. Smoking delays healing significantly.
