The Tropical Paradise Of The North

Santa Fe: Bantayan Island

The Island town is blessed with powdery, pure white sand and clear waters so abundantly that blessed is quite an understatement. Its 10 barangays (two are island barangays Hilantagaan and Kinatarcan) thrive with tourism as their bread and butter, but fishing remains the main source of livelihood hereabouts.

Getting There:

Take a bus ride from North Bus Terminal to Hagnaya Port in San Remigio. From there, take an hour ride via Roro boat to Santa Fe port. On the lean season, it is very easy to find a place to stay but just be sure, book a resort first.

What To Do:

Summer months are the busiest especially that Holy Week falls on these times. Both local and foreign tourists flock to its beaches from sunrise to sundown.

Island hopping is an interesting option, too. A 25 minute ride from the mainland will take you to Hilantagaan Diot, more popularly know as Virgin Island. As its name suggests, image the powdery white sand, sparkling water and coconuts adorning the shore and little else. Gear up for this island trip as there are only a few cottages, no stores to buy food: just you, the sand, and the sun. Rent a boat from the locals for a meager fee 1, 500 pesos to get this island. And if you are lucky, you can have the feel of owning the island, especially on off peak seasons. Ask from your resorts staff too if they have a package that offers this tour.

Snorkeling in the island should not be missed. Fishes and corals in different colors and shapes will surely make you want to extend for more days to explore the underwater life.

Santa Fe is just a small place to wander around. Discover local life by renting a trisikad (bicyle with a sidecar) to drive you around, or a  bike to take you to the church, plaza and marketplace.

And one more thing, do not miss both the sunrise and sunset, equally magnificent.

The town of Santa Fe was once a barangay of Bantayan. It was established as a town in 1872, owning its name from a small town in Spain.

The people in Santa Fe are very religious that, in fact, they actually have two main churches of different faiths facing each other the Sto Niño church and the Iglesia Filipina Independente (Aglipay).

The colorful history of its religion dates back to 1903 when the leading families of the town including its parish priest joined the Aglipayan Church. For many years, the town has become the center of Aglipayanism in Cebu, and eventually the Catholic church was closed.

In 1933, Catholicism was reestablished in the town with parishioners slowly coming back to folds of the Catholic church. To this date, both churches shared a storied history and continued to serve its parishioners.
